Did you ever know a married couple that simply could not play bridge together? Well, Unit 109’s bridge playing couple, Bill and Estelle Rowland, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on December 24, 2009 and play together weekly. They have been playing bridge together for over half a century! Bill and Estelle are 96 and 94 years young, respectively.
This past weekend was the Richmond Sectional. The 0-300 game had 14 tables, a new record. Not only were there 28 pairs playing in that game, but there were other 0-300 pairs playing in the open game. So we had record turnout of I/Ns for the game. Included in the 14 tables were at least 8 to 10 ifrom the current Friendly Bridge class. Thanks to Ed and Paul for giving these new players the confidence to play in the Sectional. Click for larger image.
On June 17, 2010, Fauquier County Duplicate Bridge Club members and friends gave special recognition to one of their own pairs, Joyce Andrick (Warrenton) and Sylvia Coffman (Amissville), for their excellent performance in the ACBL's International Fund Thursday afternoon pairs session game held May 13 at the Warrenton US Army National Guard Armory, results of which were reported in the last two weeks by ACBL.
On Tuesday, June 15, Neil Spokes, the Fauquier County Duplicate Bridge Club Manager, received a special personal call from Margaret Bloodworth, the Charity fund organizer at ACBL advising us of Joyce and Sylvia’s achievement. With a superb score in excess of 70%, Joyce and Sylvia led the ENTIRE ACBL DISTRICT 6 field. ACBL’s District 6 encompasses all of the competing players at clubs in Virginia, Washington DC and Maryland. Clearly this is a most excellent achievement. In the process Joyce and Sylvia scored ten master points (5 red plus 5 black) towards their totals. Neil then heard Friday June 20th, that our wonderful pair – Joyce and Sylvia besides being top in ACBL District 6, were in 12th place in the world on Thursday May 13 in the ACBL’s International Fund game. According to ACBL’s Mrs. Margaret Bloodworth, there were 16,000 tables playing in 136 clubs on that date in that competition! So Joyce and Sylvia came in 12th out of 32,000 pairs.
On June 17 corsages were presented to Joyce and Sylvia in recognition of their achievements. All the players preparing for the game in Warrenton’s Armory facility applauded Sylvia and Joyce loudly.
